Plantlife started the No Mow May movement, to encourage greater biodiversity in lawns. Many people now extend the no-mow period for the entire summer, in order to allow time for wildlife development:

Normal lawnmowers will often struggle to cut very long grass. On smaller 'meadows', garden shears may be adequate. On larger areas, strimmers or hedge trimmers can do the job, but as this site explains, traditional scything is undergoing a revival, among enthusiasts:
